Friday 24 May 2013: ![]() Direct from Albuquerque, New Mexico, maybe via Hebden Bridge (if not Hell’s Ditch), ‘THE BEATLES of the folk world’ aka ‘Alt.Country’s WHITE STRIPES’ return to the venue they were born to play for a record-breaking fifth show...on Bob Dylan's 72nd birthday! Guess this time we are going to have to offer Brett and Rennie the Freedom of Farndale...and ask them to play Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues? Saturday 29 June 2013: ![]() The Blue Mosquitoes of Tasmania are making a big splash Down Under with their high octane Celtic-influenced folk. Friday 5 July 2013: ![]() Founder member of Canada's THE WAILIN’ JENNYS, Australian-born Ruth Moody debuts here direct from Winnipeg, Manitoba. An artist of exceptional depth known for her trademark ethereal vocals, virtuoso multi-instrumentalism (she plays guitar, banjo, accordion, piano, and bodhrán), and razor-sharp songwriting, Ruth’s debut solo album The Garden featured an all-star cast including OH SUSANNA, CROOKED STILL, LUKE DOUCET, Nicky and Heather of THE WAILIN’ JENNYS and KEVIN BREIT (Norah Jones, K.D. Lang). Latterly she has been opening for MARK KNOPFLER and sings on the former Dire Straits supremo’s new album Privateering. Please feel free to bring Mark along, Ruth.
Monday 22 July 2013: ![]() Legends of both Cajun and Zydeco, Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys bring the incendiary sound of southern Louisiana to ‘the greatest small venue on Earth’ on this, their 25th anniversary. For the Band Room historians out there, tonight’s show will transport many of us back to the Full Mardi Gras Moon of August 1995 when Big Mark met Carolyn and Steve’s demon fiddler Kevin Wimmer brought the house down with Cajun greats BALFA TOUJOURS. There’s a bottle of Talisker waiting for you backstage, Kevin. Saturday 21 September 2013: ![]() Operating at the CAPTAIN BEEFHEART and SWAMP ends of Alt.country, Texas-born maverick Johnny Dowd and his incendiary band are part of the Gothic Americana triumvirate that also includes THE HANDSOME FAMILY and JIM WHITE. His predilection for black humour, the absurd and spiky machine-gun electric guitar have also drawn comparisons with NICK CAVE and TOM WAITS. But in the final analysis Dowd, from Ithaca, New York, is a true original who defies categorisation, which we think is a sign of greatness… : ![]() Brass is coming home to The Band Room tonight when 6 solo stars of the legendary BLACK DYKE BAND – 12-time European Champions and arguably the greatest brass band in the world - play ‘the greatest small venue on earth’ as the WHITE RIVER BRASS ENSEMBLE. Featuring a virtuoso 5-star cast of Brett Baker (Trombone), Katrina Marzella (Baritone Horn), Rob Westacott (Cornet), Keith Britcliffe (Cornet), Jonathan Bates (Horn) and Joseph Cook (Tuba) this distilled version of the band which released one of the first singles on The Beatles’ Apple label and has worked with Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel and Tori Amos is here the night before Remembrance Sunday, and their 2-hour set will include Hymn to the Fallen and 633 Squadron in honour of the War Dead

Hi there and welcome to The Band Room on the North York Moors - variously described as 'The greatest small venue on Earth' (The Handsome Family), 'The Shed that Rocks' (The Guardian), 'England's tiniest major venue' (The Yorkshire Post) and 'a corrugated iron shed in the middle of nowhere' (We said that). It's all true... Four years after her show here in 2006 Cerys Matthews reminisced on BBC Radio 6: "It's a very special place"...Willy Mason said: "Wow - this is great!"...Louisiana Cajun legend Marc Savoy declared: "The Band Room was my favourite show!"...while Howe Gelb revealed, exclusively: "It's got a great vibe...and werewolves too..." You can read reviews of some of our shows here in The Guardian and The Press and see videos - lo-fi, naturally - of some of them here on
Built for the Farndale Silver Band in the 1920s this 100-capacity wooden room 35 miles north of York has got to be one of the best 'intimate' gigs in the whole of England, with its crystalline-pure acoustics, magical atmosphere and unpretentious homespun vibe (we don't sell alcohol - but you're welcome to bring your own). Shows are few and sometimes far between while we wait for our principal targets to become available - so we try to make every show count. There are no ordinary acts, no perfunctory gigs, no fillers. We have no spring or autumn schedule to cobble together. Life's too short. Everyone who plays here has released at least one critically-acclaimed CD and before we book anyone we always ask the same question: are they good enough to play here? If the triple and quadruple encores are anything to go by, the acts respond with what can't be far short of career-best performances. Indeed, many big Alt.country | Americana | Folk | Rock | Roots stars have fallen in love with The Band Room and called their shows here the highlight of their European tours. The best way to experience the gig is to make a weekend of it. There are great places to stay in Farndale, aka 'Daffodil Valley' by virtue of the 'lentern lilies' which carpet the valley floor in a sea of yellow each spring, or on the nearby moors - in farmhouse B&Bs, country inns or 200-year old self-catering sandstone cottages, many of which are listed here on our accommodation page... The Band Room feels privileged to support The Abbotson Trust for Music Therapy. 50p of every ticket sold goes to this Kirkbymoorside-based trust, which provides funding for innovation and research into the healing potential of music therapy for children and adults with special needs. |
